About this guide
“Our gender identity is something we feel in our soul.” (Dr. Robin Dea)
Many of us are so comfortable with our gender that we take it for granted.
For families of children who struggle with a different experience, we hope this guide will provide a few coordinates and some support in barely charted territory.

Radio & Television
This American Life: Somewhere Out There. Act Two: Tom Girls.
"Lilly and Thomasina have a lot in common. They're both 8 years old. And they were both born boys, although it became clear pretty early on that they'd prefer to be girls. There aren't all that many kids in the world like them, but recently, at a conference in Seattle on transgender parenting, they met. And they immediately hit it off. They could talk about things with each other that they'd never been able to share with other friends back home. And that's comforting, even if they never see each other after the conference ends. Producer Mary Beth Kirchner tells the story. Rebecca Weiker is associate producer of the story." (17 minutes) Originally aired 13 February 2009.
In the Life: Becoming Me
"Eight families with transgender and gender non-conforming children ranging in ages from 5 to 25 share their stories. With the healthy development of their children at stake, parents must confront binary perceptions of gender, widespread transphobia and controversial parenting decisions." (28 minutes) 20th Season, 2012.
